Exam Project / Life Cycle Project - In Depth Analysis - Andy Goldsworthy

CONTEXT:
- This piece of artwork was made by Andy Goldsworthy called ''Rowans leaves and Hole''
- Goldsworthy is also a sculpture which display through his world of sculpting the image before taking the picture.
- He likes to work with natural things and the seasons around him e.g if it's snowing, he'll work with the snow.
- From a child he began to sculpt from potatoes, on the farm he lived on. He then went to Bradford college of Art and then went onto University of Central Lancashire.
- He is also the subject of the 2001 documentary ''Rivers and Tides'' directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer

ASTHETICS:
- because of the use of leaves and natural object, make the image very real

- I think using natural object in his images gives it a nice meaning as the art will eventually move or die and decay and he took the image at it's peak.
- The use of colour could give the image a narrative of symbolising the seasons with the bright colours.
-  they different stages of colours giving the picture a sense of movement, and rhythm, flowing just like the cycle of the seasons.
- I think using the red, oranges, yellow gives it quite a fiery effect and make it bright and attractive to look at, although the black hole in the middle draws you in.
- I think they object were just found and put into place before taking the picture.

MEANING:
- I think the work would be associated with nature and that would be the theme.

- I think the use of contrasting colours; the brights with the darks could symbolise where's there's good there is bad, good vs evil.
- reading biography of goldsworthy and seeing some quotes shows he enjoys creating work with nature and then taking a picture before it goes away. He just works with nature and land.

PERSONAL RESPONSE:
- This piece of work makes me think of all the different seasons.
- when I first looked at the work I enjoyed the different variations of colours but at first the black hole drew me in.
- i like andy goldsworthy work as I think working with natural things and make them look beautiful can be interesting, but it's also quite touching that after the image has been taken the art work may be destroyed.
- Now i will try and take more images regarding nature.

Exam Project /Life Cycle Project - In Depth Analysis - Bill Viola ''Nantes Triptych''

Bill Viola Nantes Triptych 1992

CONTEXT:
This specific piece of art was made by a man called Bill Viola. He Specifically works with video media and instillation so he can therefore capture the image an the sound. This piece has a duration of 29 minutes, 46 seconds made in 1992. It's called ''Nantes Triptych''. He's generally been around or doing media and video all his life. His works focuses on human experiences, religion, spirituality etc.

ASTHETICS:
I think the way the three images a placed in order of age makes the piece more real but also looks as if it is telling a story. I also think that black in the background that gives it a border gives it a emotive meaning, using a bold colour like black can make the image quite dark and depressing. The three set images could give a sense of rhythm if we were looking at it in terms of a life cycle, we could see the images going round in a circle and ongoing, giving the piece movement. Each Image is symbolic to a certain time in life, the first one being a baby in the early stages in life. the middle to me could look like a ''mid-life crisis'' as the person is in the rain and that is associated with negative things and the last one meaning death.

MEANING:

This type of art would be mixed media and could be about numerous things; emotions, concepts of transformation, people, young and old, death, spirituality and society. Many different subjects you could relate this piece to. You could say this work has a theme of life and transformations throughout it.  I think the story may have come from that Viola may have wanted to make a piece that is relevant to everyone and what happens everyday. These three panels represent key stages of life. I think this piece can allow open interpretation and how you wish to look at it.

PERSONAL RESPONSE:

When i look at this piece is make you feel sad in a way that we only seen life in three stages and presented life as short and 2/3 images are quite emotively negative. And there's any positive images to represent life. My first reaction to the work was quite negative as straight away none of the colours are bright of and happy emotions on anyone's face. But it was also quite interesting to look at life an realistic way of the time scale - being quite short. The middle panel draws my attention the most as you it isn't very clear to see what it is and have you interpret yourself. Also the rain makes the image much more interesting.  This piece you can easily relate some of it to your own life and maybe question which stage are you at yourself, therefore being quite provoking. Personally, I don't like the piece myself as I would look at life quite positively rather than a depressing short time.

Unit 2 - Exam Project - My Five Ideas

My first idea was money, and that i was interesting in the journey that the money takes and the amount of hands it goes through. Then i started to think back through the life project and that money is made from paper, which are made from trees. i can then take landscape images if some trees, and take different types of images relating to those ideas. This could symbolize the journey of one that could them be transformed into something else.

My second idea was the take close ups of different body parts of people with different ethnicity and for then produce a large collage of the images. This could relates to inequality, and that everyone is different, but could also be a good way of presenting your work differently rather than just producing a formal mounted sheet.

Another idea could be to take images of my sister as i have three little sister which are close with age 6, 2 and 9 months. This relating to agism and time never stopping, we just grow old.

Another idea could be to go to  graveyard and take images of death and maybe life after death. This could be interpreted anyway but you could do this with a religious theme.

My Last idea is to visit london zoo and take picture of maybe a snake shedding it's skin and animals with their babies etc. This could be a good idea as to photograph animals maybe more interesting than photographing humans.
