Personal Project - Development

Here are the darkroom images i done inspired by Jason Travis. They didn't come out as well as I hoped in terms of lighting and the lack of focus looks accidental. I also had some problems in terms of developing as the negative came out stripy again again which is what happened the last time I asked my teacher and she advised me to allow some time for the negative to be in the fix for over half an hour to see if the problem would resolve. In the end it solved the issue. As you can see from my contact sheet where the stripes were. I'm going to use these images underneath the portraits and cut them into strips and ensemble them into a pattern to make them more visually interesting.

These portrait were taken on a DSLR of the people that I previously took the object from. I wanted to use these people as you can see there face and then there everyday objects they hold that are important to them. I have done four show you can see similarities and different in what people find important.

After I had done this I printed them out and started to experiment with them by cutting them up. This is when I found some inspiration on pintrest and found the artist Greg Sand which uses the same technique.

I started to use different material such as coloured card.

As you can see from this image the two images were going different ways and i wanted them to match. I then realised that I was cutting them the same way and one had to be cut horizontally and the other vertically.

I then photo copied the image onto graph paper in black and white and the coloured paper in slightly transparent. As you can see they slightly don't match but I think this technique still works well.

Personal Project - Indepth Analysis - Tin Tin Cooper

This art work is from a woman called Tin Tin Cooper. She came from Bangkok and currently works there also alternating from London. She studied at school in Bangkok, and recently completed her masters in London. I think this work relates to contemporary photography in the technique she using of combining two of the same image together and placing it around in different ways. I think this is a good way of highlight and being selective in what you want the audience to see. By doing the photographic weaving it distorts the image and gives an abstract effect.

For this images, stripes have been cut out of the images and the slits into the image it will be weaved into and then out together. Cooper has then played around with where she puts the slits and created different patterns such as diagonal lines, criss cross pattern etc. I think the arrangement of the image is different and interesting on the image. I particularly like the second image of the face  masked out.

I think that the images have been posed and then Cooper has thought about the end result and what she doesn't want the audience to see and then has weaved into those places . I think to make this image she needed the camera she took the photographs, these look like digital. She then need a ruler to measure out her lines, and the need a cutting knife, a cutting board and some scissors to cut out her strips. She would then have to weave her strips into the slits she had made.

I really like this piece of work as it allows to be creative with your images. If you took an image of somebody that wasn't ready for the image, or the pose wasn't exactly right, you could use this technique to mask it and make it look more interesting. I also think by doing this, you could change the whole meaning of the image and give it a completely different look.

Cooper has inspired me to do my own photo weaving as I feel it gives complexity to your images.

Personal Project - Indepth Analysis - Lin Tianmiao

This image was created by an artist called Lin Tianmiao, who did a project called focus in 2001. She was born in 1961 in China. She studied at Capital Normal University in China and also went to school in New York. Since the she has worked all over the work e.g Australia. But currently lives in Beijing. These image looks at the focus and playing around with it to get interested result. Having the image unfocused makes the objects distorted and make it more visually interesting. I also think that the image has been cropped down into the middle of the face just to make it a little bit easier to see what were looking at.

By having the close makes it easier to see but to also notice the marking that have been put above the image. There are little circle shapes that look like liquid that has now dried up above the image to create layers and texture. I think that creat a top layer it also bring your focus more onto the markings rather than the image there for makingthe background image again in less focus.

I think that the artist use a film camera and took the image out of focus. The lighting doesn't also look very good and a low filter would have been used. All these in though also impacted the focus of the image. Keeping the tones to a minimum.

I really like the idea of having image out of focus because it is different and I think that it allows the audience to take a second glance at the image to really find out what the image is underneath. Whilst taking double the time to look at your image, other thoughts and feelings may come into the audiences mind and there for change their opinion. Also due to taste and interpretations leads to different feedback. This has inspired in my own to create images intentionally out of focus in order to engage my audience and present images differently.

Personal Project - In-depth Analysis - Jason Travis

Jason Travis

Jason Travis is from Atlanta and has worked with many clients such as Scoutmob, Vidal Sassoon and Sam Flax. He does various photography such as portraits for gallery shows, weddings, engagement shoots, in variety of settings putting 100% effort in all of his work. He held gallery shows at Young Blood, Puritan Mill, and the Marriot Marquis. He has a background of graphic design with helps him a lot with his work. On the side he has also directed and edited music videos. Whatever there is Jason Travis has done it.

The way these images have been designed are in two half's. The top is a portrait of the person and the bottom half of the image is a selection of that person objects that relates to them. Forming the image that way allows it to be clear  on the purpose of the image. All the objects are laid out neats with enough of space without looking bunched together and too busy. All these images relate to the person above. I think that the objects that have been used are unique and looks as though they would relate to the model looking realistic.

In order to take these photographs I don't think that it took a lot to do other than location. It looks as thought the modelled was photographed in the library using depth of field for the main focal point to be the model. To me it looks like natural lighting though studio lighting may have been used as though the images look very bright and clean and compliments the colours of the images. this is a digital photograph, so would have been edited on photoshop altering the colours some more in order to be as bright as possible using colours tools adjusting brightness and contrast.

I really liked this work as I felt it was interesting and gives you more of a story about a person rather then just their portrait. by putting some object beside them gives you a little more about the person on what who they are and what they like and what they find most important to carry around with them. E.g having a iPod showing they like music, car keys, having a car, having book because they like to read.

I wanted to research Travis' work as I wanted to use the theme for my own personal project.
I wanted to take the idea of photograph everyday ideas you would have in your bag, but an interesting effect of not having them in complete focus. I wanted the images to be interesting to look at and you have to really concentrate if you wanted to know what the object are.
